The School of Music was formerly known as the Music Department of Wenzhou Normal College founded in 1997, with a history of more than 20 years. There are a total of 71 faculty members, including 60 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 13 professors, 17 associate professors, 21 with doctoral degrees, 22 with the qualification to supervise postgraduate students. We have 671 full-time students consisting of 566 undergraduates, 105 postgraduates (Including international students). The School contains four departments of music theory, vocal music, piano, dance and instrumental music, as well as the International Education Office, Continuing Education Center, Youth Art Theater, etc. High-level art groups such as choirs, symphony orchestras, national orchestras, etc. were built.

We offer postgraduate programs in Music and Dance Studies, and Music Subject Teaching, and undergraduate programs in Musicology (teacher training) and Dance Education (teacher training). In 2021, the Musicology was rated as a national first-class undergraduate program. In 2018, the joint training doctoral program of Musicology between Wenzhou University and Chonnam National University begun to enroll students. With profound academic foundation and distinctive disciplines, the School has a good reputation in the country. According to “2018-2019 China Postgraduate Education and Discipline Evaluation Report,” the discipline of Music and Dance Studies ranked 6th in the country (top 7%). It ranked 10th nationwide (top 10.8%) by ShanghaiRanking, and remained in top 20% in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

We are proud of our complete teaching facilities and abundant resources. The School has a modern building of nearly 20,000 square meters, including 3 large dance studios, 1 concert hall, 1 digital music classroom, 1 recording studio, 3 digital piano classrooms and 280 piano rooms.

Our original national opera “Five-starred Red Flag” has won several titles and awards, including the 2020-2021 Research and Creation Project accredited by Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, the Outstanding Award of 2021 Fourth China Opera Festival, and the 2022 Project subsidized by China National Arts Fund.

The students achieved good results in national, provincial and municipal competitions. Our chorus won the gold medal in the World Choir Championships, the gold medal in China Choir Festival, and the first prize in the professional group of the National University Student Art Exhibition and Performance Competition. Our Chinese Orchestra won the first prize in the professional group of the Provincial University Student Art Exhibition and Performance Competition. Several students won the title of top ten singers in the professional group of the Provincial University Students Art Festival, the first prize in the Provincial Teacher Skills Competition, etc. The program of Musicology (teacher training) was rated as the most competitive program in Wenzhou University with its graduates’ employment rate and rate of advanced study among the top in the province.
