Professor Zhao Min Elected as Member of Russian Academy of Engineering

Professor Zhao Min, President of Wenzhou University and Oujiang Scholar, was elected to the Russian Academy of Engineering (RAE), according to the new list released by RAE on its official website.

Prof. Zhao Min is a second-level professor and doctoral supervisor. He also works as Director of the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Urban Water Pollution Ecological Control Technology. Engaged in the research on water control for more than 30 years, he specializes in several distinctive new technologies of water control such as the ecological management of cyanobacterial blooms and decentralized sewage treatment and utilization. Due to his outstanding contributions to water environment management, Prof. Zhao won titles of “National Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions”, “National Advanced Worker”, “National May 1st Labor Medal Winner”, and “Zhejiang Province Model Worker”, etc. He was also included in the “National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project” and “Ten Thousand Talents Plan” of Zhejiang Province. Enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, he serves as a member of the Biological Science Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society for Mathematical Biology, Executive Director of the Chinese Society of Phycology, Vice Chairman of the Zhejiang Society for Environmental Sciences, Vice Chairman of Ecological Society of Zhejiang Province, and Deputy Director of Zhejiang Biological Science Teaching Steering Committee, etc.

In response to the need of domestic sewage treatment and based on the research about the outbreak of cyanobacteria blooms, Prof. Zhao has undertaken more than 20 scientific research projects, including two national major projects such as the “Research and Application of Eco-friendly Distributed Domestic Sewage On-site Treatment and Utilization Technology”, one national key project, one 973 Program and four projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Moreover, he led his team to build eight national-level demonstration projects in Hainan National Space Satellite Launch Base and other places. His research results were selected into the List of Applicable Technologies and Products for Sponge City by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for Technological Innovation in Housing and Urban-Rural Construction, and were applied nationwide to improve the technology and management in decentralized sewage treatment. 

On top of that, Prof. Zhao won the first prize of Zhejiang Province Natural Science Award, the first prize of Zhejiang Province Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of China Industry-University-Research Collaboration Innovation Achievement Award, and the second prize of Natural Science Award for University Scientific Research by Ministry of Education. He has published more than 100 SCI papers in journals such as Bioresource Technology, Chemosphere, Harmful Algae, Aquaculture, Journal of Cleaner Production, Physical Review E, etc., holds 18 patents for invention, and serves as the editor-in-chief of Carbon Neutralization (published by Wiley).

With the principle of driving the development of disciplines with scientific research, the ecology discipline of Wenzhou University, headed by Prof. Zhao, has been rated as Zhejiang Provincial Distinguished Discipline, Provincial First-class Discipline, and Provincial Key Discipline. Prof. Zhao led his team to actively collaborate with other institutions internationally, and jointly established the International Water Ecological Environment Research Center and the International Water Resources and Water Ecology Research Center with the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, respectively, and served as the director of the two centers.

Formerly the Soviet Academy of Engineering, RAE was jointly established in 1990 by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Ministry of Science and Industry, the Ministry of Defense, and the Federal Space Agency. It is one of the three major cross-industry scientific institutions in Russia with huge international influence. In 1997, it was listed by UNESCO as one of the new technology expert organizations in Central and Eastern Europe. Among its nearly 1,500 members, more than 100 are foreign members, including Song Jian and Xu Kuangdi, the former presidents of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Li Xiaohong, the current president of CAE, other members of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and CAE, and renowned scientists.
